Position Description: Managing Director
Reports to: Board of Directors
Work Locations: Business Office – 10038 State Hwy 57, Liberty Grove, WI; Performance Space – Bjorklünden, 7590 Boynton Ln, Baileys Harbor, WI
Employment Status: Full-time, exempt, flexible hours
Role: The Managing Director reports to the Board of Directors and works in partnership with the Producing Artistic Director to provide the vision and leadership necessary to fulfill the mission of the organization. Working in close collaboration with the Producing Artistic Director and Board of Directors, the Managing Director plays an integral role in the development and execution of the organization’s strategic plan and annual budget.
Position Summary: The Managing Director is responsible for oversight of all aspects of financial management, marketing, fundraising, planning and general administration, including hiring decisions regarding seasonal administration staff and interns.
Primary Responsibilities
1) Administration:
- Supervises day-to-day operations and collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director in executing the season, including:
- Handling AEA union negotiations
- Handling actor offers, negotiations, and contracts for AEA and non-AEA company members, directors and designers
- Managing all HR paperwork
- Assuring compliance with AEA regulations regarding housing
- Setting and implementing weather policies
- Managing box office operations
- Coordinating relationships and scheduling with Bjorklunden staff
- Coordinating house management responsibilities at Bjorklunden
- Assisting production team with strike
- Develops, implements and manages administrative internship program
- Oversees volunteer development and coordination
2) Development/Fundraising:
- Collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director to develop and implement fundraising plan and capital fundraising efforts as appropriate
- Collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director to develop solicitation strategies annual fund campaigns, solicitation strategies for gifts and donor recognition
- In close coordination with the Producing Artistic Director, researches and writes grants to achieve budgeted goals
- Administers organizational database which includes gift and acknowledgment records
- Works with the Producing Artistic Director and Board to support annual Gala and other special events
- Develops and manages sponsorships
- Appears at fundraising events
3) Financial Management:
- Supervises all aspects of financial management, including:
- Collaborates with the treasurer, bookkeeper, accountant & Board on overall financial management
- Prepares and implements financial plan, including an annual operating budget
- Collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director to develop production budget for the season.
- Manages all accounts payable and receivable; issues checks and pays bills
- Manages payroll and payroll tax requirements
- Generates financial reports for monthly board meetings
- Manages all banking and vendor relationships
- Holds credit card accounts for theater purchases
- Manages all insurance needs
4) Marketing:

- Supervises all aspects of marketing, including:
- Oversees development of all marketing materials
- Collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director on the creation and production of all print materials
- Coordinates the creation and production of media releases and ads
- Oversees website and social media accounts
5) Audience:
- Collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director to:
- Set all ticket prices and subscription options
- Create and implement audience development initiatives
- Respond to complaints or accolades
- Oversees audience amenities
6) Programming/Outreach:
- Works in close collaboration with the Producing Artistic Director to:
- Build, nurture and sustain the theatre company to achieve its mission
- Maintain an environment that attracts and motivate top quality theatrical artists
- Plan and implement supplemental programming such as Youth in Production, Shakespeare in the Schools, Will in the Woods and others
- Maintain close ties with theater industry to assess trends and identify opportunities for Door Shakespeare
- Works with the Development Committee and others to increase the visibility of Door Shakespeare and its public image
7) Facilities:
- Oversees maintenance of administrative building as needed
- Manages office equipment for the production team, business office, box office and house management
- Manages vendors related to upkeep of building property
- Manages service contracts
- Ensures all local and state licenses are current
